When SōL Harris/Day designed the original David YMCA facility in 2003, it was with the anticipation that there would be future expansion. With this anticipation, access points and breakout walls were part of the original concept. Because of this pre-planning, the YMCA is now reaping the benefits by saving time, drastically reducing construction costs (tens of thousands of dollars) and creating minimal disruption to the current facility operations.
With a steady increase in membership and a need for more space to accommodate this growth, the YMCA contacted SōL Harris/Day to develop a plan to meet their current and future membership needs.
After careful review, SHD designed a plan that expands the facility on both ends of the building by 15,869 sf while allowing for the current building to remain fully functional. The areas of expansion include a gym, aerobics studio, larger child watch room, youth room and wellness area.
Construction began last week with the Wellness addition scheduled for completion by January 2015 and the remainder of the project completed in March 2015.
