Have you been to Mount Vernon, Ohio recently? SōL Harris/Day is grateful to have been a part of many of these transformations that Mount Vernon has undergone over the past 5 years with the revitalization of its downtown. Mount Vernon has become a great destination getaway that is just an hour from Columbus and 1 hour and 45 minutes from Cleveland. This Victorian town has a great, walkable downtown with many restaurants and shops along with unique cultural and recreation opportunities. Put this town on your list of places to visit for a regional Ohio getaway.

THE GRAND HOTEL

Walk back in time at The Grand. This 46 room boutique hotel, overlooking the square, will take your breath away with its Victorian décor, beautiful parlor, and Grand staircase. It offers period furnishing throughout and amenities such as a fitness center, business center, two conference spaces and an upscale breakfast. This won't be your typical hotel experience!

SOUTH MAIN PLAZA

Summer of 2020 brought the opening of the South Main Plaza with a playful dog fountain that features painted cast aluminum sculptures of 18 different breeds of dogs, a cat, 2 pairs of birds, a pony and an apple. The plaza is lined with benches and picnic tables that surround the fountain, offering a fun space to gather with friends and family.

ARIEL-FOUNDATION PARK

This is a spectacular 250-acre public green space. The park is built on the site of the former Pittsburgh Plate Glass manufacturing plant. Located within walking distance of Mount Vernon’s historic downtown, Ariel-Foundation Park is one of the most unique public parks in Ohio. Visitors are able to enjoy lakes, woods, walking trails, picnic areas, a bike path, an event center, a restored railroad depot, historic ruins, terraced landscaping and more. Spectacular views can be seen at night when bridges and buildings are highlighted with colored lights for special occasions. All sections of the park are open and ready to visit!

THE LOFTS

At the corner of South Main and Gambier Streets is a colorful, freshly renovated facade that brightens up the view and enhances the local charm. Above the street level shops, new condominiums encompass the top 2 floors and overlook the South Main Plaza. They provide 16 lofts that were developed from a partnership between Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Knox Community Hospital and Kenyon College. This creates downtown living options for medical staff, visiting professors and faculty. Look for it to be completed by the end of the year.

WOODWARD ARTS COMPLEX AND STEIN BREWING COMPANY RESTAURANT

The Woodward Opera House Theater and Arts Complex features a fully operational and fully equipped 500 seat theater, two recital and multipurpose rooms of 1000 sf each, and all of the necessary theater equipment, dressing rooms, and theater operations space for a first class arts operation. Conference, meeting, and banquet room space are a natural result of the construction of the facility, all available for the full utilization in the community.

Located on the street level... stop in to the Stein Brewing Company Restaurant to enjoy locally made and sourced favorites. Quench your thirst with local draft beers paired with delicious foods and desserts.

SOCCER/LACROSSE FIELD

Mount Vernon Nazarene University has completed their competition-level soccer/lacrosse field as part of the joint partnership with the city schools and community. Plans are in place to add several adjacent grass fields to host large soccer tournaments, as well as, stadium facilities for stands, concessions and locker rooms.

MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE UNIVERSITY

The University is a cornerstone of this small town. Come for a tour of this beautiful campus that offers stately structures tucked between large trees and rolling grassy lawns. Stroll the campus and see how the new blends with the old iconic buildings. You will fall in love with this small town and Christian University that is filled with rich program offerings.

MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE UNIVERSITY DOWNTOWN EXTENSION

MVNU takes pride in supporting their local community. Come for a visit and experience the Cougar pride that permeates throughout the small town. A campus tour will spill into the downtown area where they have revitalized several buildings that house their expanded programs. The most recent project is the Department of Engineering that occupies a former department store. The University, in conjunction with Knox Labs, offers you an opportunity to work with your hands... have fun creating in the makerspace on the first level that is open to the community.

MOUNT VERNON YMCA

The downtown YMCA offers a great place to workout, individually or with a class. Newly renovated, the YMCA provides fun programs for all ages within the community!

BIKE PATH AND AMPHITHEATER ALONG THE RIVER

Take a leisurely bike ride around town. Put a kayak in the river and paddle downstream. Stop to enjoy a local concert or show. The bike path now extends, connecting the downtown to the existing bike trails and offering more access to any destination in Mount Vernon. An amphitheater-style setting along the route makes this the place for outdoor entertainment!

ADDITIONAL PARKING

Don't stress over where to park. With the addition of 6 parking lots recently, visitors have easier access to all that the town has to offer. Brick accents adorn each parking area, continuing the local character.
