Join us in congratulating Andrew on 15 years at SHD! As you may already know, he was recently named Partner at the firm. Andrew provided us with some great insight into his successful architecture career:
As the newest Partner, how does this new role change your view of SHD?
The new role hasn’t changed my view of the firm, but it has reinforced my commitment to bringing well designed projects to this community and to continue the legacy that both John Harris and Jeff Day created over 50 years ago.
What is the biggest lesson learned since working for SHD?
I think the biggest thing I’ve learned is the importance of making relationships! Taking care of each client and treating their project as my own is key. Sometimes it is easy to forget that this might be their first or only time to be involved with the design of a new building or addition. Making sure to ask questions, show images for inspiration, and listening to their specific needs makes for unique design opportunities. As an architect, we are trained in communicating a thought or idea with a drawing or model…but communication with the client is just as important!
What attracted you to SHD in the first place?
From a young age, I was always interested in the construction of new buildings…(I always told my parents that I wanted to play shortstop in the Major League and if that didn’t work out architecture was my backup)! It was exciting seeing a construction fence go up and watching a new building take shape. In high school I had the opportunity to shadow an architect at SHD and it confirmed my career choice. I had interned at firms in Cleveland and Fairlawn while attending Kent State University but knew that I wanted to remain in Stark county after graduation. I had a desire to work on local projects that would impact the community in which I lived and many of those new projects I saw were designed by SHD!
