In the spirit of donation and sustainability the SōL Harris/Day Sustainability Committee organized a professional clothing drive earlier this year.
With our office going to a more casual attire in recent years, we thought this could be a great way to help local communities while minimizing our individual carbon footprint.
By purposefully donating items to local organizations, we avoid them ending up in landfills, or just sitting in our closets until we eventually throw them away. We can help those individuals who are seeking jobs or starting a new chapter in their lives but can struggle to find ways of looking as good as they feel.
Clothes were donated to the Akron Urban League- whose mission is “to improve the quality of life of the citizens of Summit County, particularly African Americans, through self-reliance and social empowerment”, and to Goodwill Industries whose mission is ”to empower people on their journey to independence, through the sale of goods, which supports employment programs and family service.”
In total we were able to donate just under 200lbs. and though that may not sound like a lot, it is actions like these that will help communities and the planet thrive.
The committee plans on organizing similar drives on a yearly basis, focusing on different groups and needs.
