So much can happen in five years. Will Duncan can attest to that as he celebrates his 5th Anniversary at SōL Harris/Day. In his 5 years with the firm, he has had to navigate through a pandemic and the after effects of that on the construction industry. This has only strengthened his knowledge and ability to think outside the box to develop solutions to maintain successful projects. We asked Will about these last 5 years and he shared his thoughts...
What changes are you seeing in construction?
The two biggest changes I have seen are in labor and cost. For the last few years, costs and labor were unpredictable and very unstable. Most of which has since subsided and become the ‘new normal’. Owners, architects, and contractors have had to become creative and flexible in order to adapt to the new market. While it can be challenging at times to find solutions and think outside the box, it makes it even more rewarding when you are able to put all the pieces together and deliver a quality project that meets or exceeds the client’s expectations.
What is the biggest lesson learned since working at SHD?
Having good relationships with clients and contractors is at the heart of being successful. Being able to rely on people you trust and fostering those strong working relationships are what drive successful companies. The best compliment we can get is a repeat customer because it means we checked all of their boxes, and it shows that they trust us.
What advantages do you see with your role as Construction Manager partnered with an architecture firm?
Communication is pretty seamless. It’s great to work with the architect because I get to be involved with the project very early on and I get to see from the architect’s perspective and even the owner’s perspective. It allows me to have a wholesome view of the project from both the design and the construction sides, and has truly expanded my knowledge of how certain things are done and how we can best serve our clients.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part is spending time on the job sites. I get to see firsthand how the construction documents our team puts together are implemented and brought to reality. I enjoy learning from the contractors and expanding my technical knowledge. Seeing everything in action is fun!
