Please join us in congratulating Julie Ziga on 10 years with the firm. A decade...10 years...so much can happen in that amount of time. Julie has brought to life so many projects during her time here...from concept to an occupied built environment that is shaping how people live, work and learn. See how the last 10 years have shaped how Julie see's architecture and SHD:
With your strong focus on sustainability, how have you seen this shape architecture over the last 10 years?
"Sustainability is increasingly being viewed as something integral to the design and construction process, rather as an optional add-on. This mindset challenges us to incorporate sustainability features in creative and cost-effective ways, with the goal of methodically raising the standards for all of our projects."
What is the biggest lesson learned since working for SHD?
"The importance of clear and consistent communication. Architecture is a complex puzzle which involves a great deal of coordination between the owner, consultants, contractors, and within our internal team. This is crucial no matter the scale, scope, or intricacies of the project."
How has SHD changed over the past 10 years and where do you see SHD in the next 10 years?
"Over the past 10 years, the SHD team has solidified our expertise in key sectors like education, recreation, and the workplace. We have also emerged into other sectors, increasing our expertise in areas that include country clubs, retail, and amphitheaters. I continue to be impressed at the breadth of SHD's experience. I see this trend enduring over the next 10 years as we continue to push ourselves to take on new endeavors."
What benefits does SHD offer that keep the job interesting?
"I've had the opportunity to work on many types of projects, including schools, offices, daycares, and churches. Each type of project has a unique set of obstacles and opportunities, so I appreciate that I am continually building my knowledge base and technical understanding, and that I have had the opportunity to work with several different clients along the way."
